The Lovely Words Devotional Series on 1 Peter: Hang on to Faith
Devotional Reading: Peter 1:3-12 A little FYI before we begin. When I wrote this devotional I used The Message Bible. Click here to read the devotional passage from The Message. When you choose to follow Jesus you are given a brand new life, a new way of living, and a new way of loving. Yet Peter is clear that even though you have this new life in Christ that it won’t always be easy. There will be struggles along the way, and even times of immense pain. I Peter 1:6-7 reminds us that as a follower of Jesus times of aggravation and suffering allow us to grow deeper in our faith….if we allow it. Personally, there have had many times in my life where I have let suffering and pain cause me to lose faith instead of running towards it. A few years ago a close family member tried to commit suicide, and instead of running to God I ran away from my faith. I didn’t pray for a year, and avoided church, and anything to do with God. Honestly, I never thought I would come back to my faith, but this prodigal daughter finally made her way back home. The how it happened is for another time, but I’m happy I made the decision to start running towards faith again. If you are in the middle of a struggle right now and are about to lose faith I want to invite you to hang on…..Take it day by day. Allow yourself to feel whatever you need to feel, and lean on those people who you can trust to feed your faith and not your fears. I can’t make any promises that it will be easy work moving towards faith. The journey and growth process is different for each of us. The invitation is simply to begin….. And hang on to this hope… “God is keeping careful watch over us and the future. The Day is coming when you’ll have it all—life healed and whole.” I Peter 1:5 Today’s Verse 1 Peter 1:1-2 (The Message)
“I, Peter, am an apostle on assignment by Jesus, the Messiah, writing to exiles scattered to the four winds. Not one is missing, not one forgotten. God the Father has his eye on each of you, and has determined by the work of the Spirit to keep you obedient through the sacrifice of Jesus. May everything good from God be yours!” 1 Peter 1:1-2 I have an important reminder for you today. One that you may want to write down and post where you can see it often. “God sees you. You are not forgotten”. That’s good right? Knowing that the God of creation sees you, not in a superficial glance kind of way, but sees you through your soul. God deeply, truly, and lovingly sees you. God sees all your ugly messed up moments, and sees those times you are pouring God’s love into another person’s life. He sees it all. You are not forgotten. You were given the Holy Spirit to help you remember that you are not in exile, or alone in your walk with God. No one is missing or missing out. Even when God feels a million miles away God is their whispering for you to stay obedient to the call to follow Jesus. Take some time today to reflect on all the times God has shown up in your life. If you have time write these moments down in a journal. And read through them whenever you feel like God is far away. Let them be your reminder of when God came near, and know you are not forgotten…..God sees you always! |
